July Is Disability Pride Month!
Welcome to Disability Pride Month which last all of July – like other awareness months this is a chance for those who are disabled to raise awareness and to show that they exist in this world and that they are not a hidden section of the community (even if that is how it feels most of the time, sadly).
The Disability Pride Month flag showing in the background is the official flag that was created by Ann Magill, a disabled woman. She made the flag to represent everyone within the disabled community regardless of what their disability is, the brake down of the elements of the flag are as follows…
The Black Field: A colour of mourning; for those who have suffered from Ableist violence, and also rebellion and protest.
The Five Colours: The variety of needs and experiences (Mental Illness, Intellectual and Developmental Disability, Invisible and Undiagnosed Disabilities, Physical Disability, and Sensory Disabilities)
The Parallel Stripes: Solidarity within the Disability Community and all its differences.
