In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been spending quite a bit of time reviewing music lately. Although I am primarily a book reviewer it is nice to just kick back, slip on a pair of headphones, and give your ears some exercise.
Avalon Rising is a Celtic rock band whose music can be relaxing, or it can put you on your feet. This group of Pagan musicians has been around for a while and shows no signs of fading from view.
They blend traditional music and words with creations of their own and it is sometimes hard to tell where one leave off and the other begins. Not only do they play well together, they seem (to me) to have a chemistry that approaches magickal, but maybe that isn’t unusual given their Pagan roots.
I was thrilled when Flowinglass Music agreed to send me some of their CDs for review. I’ve never seen much available from major distributors and am always on the lookout for music which addresses Pagan concerns and sensibilities.
I had heard of Avalon Rising via a couple of Pagan gatherings and a compilation CD (“Best of Pagan Song” from www.serpentinemusic.com ) and was hoping that the one song I had heard wasn’t a fluke. I can now say that it wasn’t. Their music is worth the
small effort it takes to find it.
This isn’t elevator music, nor is it hard-driving, overpowering music. It is a mellow, enjoyable work. Whether traditional or a modern composition; whether instrumental or vocal, it is just plain enjoyable to listen to.
If you are one of those individuals (like me) who prefers to support Pagan-owned groups and businesses please do yourself and the rest of the larger Pagan community, a favor and support this independent distributor. Visit their website, www.flowinglass.com and check out their offerings. The more support such organizations get, the more likely we, as a community, are to be offered products that match our beliefs and lifestyles.
If you enjoy this CD (and I am willing to bet you will) tell your friends, coven-mates, and any other Pagans you know. I don’t say this very often, but this CD would make a nice gift for someone on your gift-giving list.
